Coptic papyrology was born almost 150 years ago, and since then the study of papyri and ostraca written in Coptic has yielded a wealth of information about Late Antique and Early Islamic Egypt. The lecture will look at some of the milestones in the history of the discipline and detail the prospects and challenges facing papyrologists.

An International Summer School in Coptic Papyrology, the seventh after Vienna 2006, Leipzig 2008, Strasbourg 2010, Heidelberg 2012, Barcelona 2014, and Paris 2018, will be held at the Museo Egizio in Turin from 3 to 10 September 2023. It will be organized by the Museo Egizio in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Fondazione per le scienze religiose (Bologna).
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion, is opening a new temporary exhibition dedicated to reading and writing in Ancient Egypt. The exhibition is open from 7th December 2022 till 7th September 2023.
The manuscript, being the only true king list apart from Manetho which includes many kings who are otherwise unknown, was purchased by the consul B. Drovetti around 1820, and was seen and described for the first time by F. Champollion in 1824. Over the last 200 years, thanks to the efforts of numerous scholars, it was possible to combine most of the approximately 300 fragments. The last restoration took place in 1930 by H. Ibscher (Berlin) and E. Caudana (Turin), who cleaned and repositioned the fragments with thin strips of silk. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the deciphering of the hieroglyphs, the papyrus was completely restored in 2022 by M. Krutzsch (Berlin). The restoration project followed the new reconstruction developed by K. Ryholt (Copenhagen), who in recent years has devoted himself to the study of manuscript. He added numerous fragments that were not included in previous editions and rearranged many other fragments that were included but in their wrong positions.

A manuscript shattered into thousands of pieces, reconstructed thanks to the collaboration between Egyptologists and restorers, reveals new aspects of the funerary tradition at Deir el-Medina at the dawn of the Ramessid age. This Book of the Dead for the scribe Baki, head of the construction works of the tomb of Sethi I in the Valley of the Kings, anticipates textual and iconographic elements that will inspire the works of local artists and reach their maximum expression in the decoration of the tomb of Queen Nefertari, wife of Ramesses II.

Thursday 9 December in Cuneo, at the Spazio Innov@tion (via Roma 17), opens the exhibition "Satire and humor in ancient Egypt. The restored papyrus", in which the so-called" Erotic-Satirical Papyrus" is exhibited, one of the first examples of graphic art comparable to modern comic strip. The exhibition will remain open to the public with free admission until Sunday 27 February 2022.

The online session consists of two parts; after an introductory part on the history of and objects in the museum's papyrus collection, the concept and structure of the “Turin papyrus online platform” (TPOP) will be presented.
The Papyrus Collection contains around 700 manuscripts and over 17,000 papyrus fragments, documenting more than 3,000 years of material culture written in seven scripts and eight languages. How do we take care of it?
