General description

Book of the Dead

Cat. 1831 is a Book of the Dead papyrus made for the god's father and priest of Amun in Karnak named Peteamunnebnesetawy. His coffin is displayed in the top register, on the far right-hand side of the papyrus, being carried to his grave on a sledge in a procession. The coffin is placed upright next to the door of his tomb and the "Opening of the Mouth Ritual" is performed on him by a priest, so that the deceased can breathe and speak in the Afterlife. The rest of the depictions at the top of the papyrus correspond to several spells from the Book of the Dead, such as travelling in the bark of the sun god Re, adoring the gods, protective spells against crocodiles and snakes, transforming into a lotus flower, etc. The larger scene in the middle of the papyrus depicts the Elysian Fields, here Peteamunnebnesetawy is seen ploughing and cultivating the land. The next full sized vignette depicts him being in the judgement hall in front of the god Osiris waiting for his heart to be weighed, which would allow Peteamunnebnesetawy a safe passage into the netherworld.
