General description

Book of the Dead

Cat. 1833 is a colourful Book of the Dead papyrus made for the woman Tayesnakht, on the far right hand side of the papyrus she is depicted being transported to her grave on a boat as part of a long procession. Her mummy is placed upright and the "Opening of the Mouth Ritual" is performed to restore her senses. At  the bottom of the following scene, she is shown sitting on a stool before a person who is performing a libation offering for her. The next vignettes at the top of the papyrus show Tayesnakht adoring several gods with accompanying spells written in hieratic below them. A little further to the left, Tayesnakht is seen fending off several different animals as part of the protective spells that are written underneath the images. The following full sized scene depicts the Elysian Fields. To the left is another large scene where the heart of Tayesnakht is weighed against the feather of justice in order to verify if she had led a righteous life.
