Letter to the policeman Nakhtsethi Cat. 1977 is a letter from Deir el-Medina written only on the recto in the hieratic script, dating to the 19th Dynasty. The writer, unnamed, replies to a letter from a necropolis workman, who had asked for information about the condition of one of the Medjays (= policemen), called Nakhtsethi, and who had informed him about the death of his mother. The man begins the letter saying that Nakhtsethi has been sentenced to compulsory labours. Then the letter goes on and we learn more about some of family members of Nakhtsethi: the writer says that he will fulfill Nakhtsethi’s request, expressed in the previous letter, to give his mother’s salary to the sister, who has been a widow for a year now. Furthermore, the author refers to Nakhtsethi’s brother, who has to addend a court session for an issue with his servants. At the end of the letter, the author informs the workman that he and his troop of Medjay are doing well and prays him to reply with some news about himself.
