Magical papyrus Thoth
Papyrus CGT 54053 is a fragmentary manuscript written in the hieratic script. The scroll originally contained eleven columns of text, nine written on the recto and two on the verso; at the current state of conservation the second column is completely lost, while only sections of the others are partly preserved.
The text is a copy of the text written on the recto of papyrus CGT 54050, a collection of magical spells to be recited to heal a patient from snake bites or, generally, to protect him from all demons and evil spirits who can cause illnesses. To make the ritual effective, the magician identifies himself with the god Thoth, thought to be the one who composed the formulas, whose power is evoked through the recitation of the spells. The last four columns of text contain a long hymn to Thoth, to be understood as conclusion of the whole manuscript. Among the various copies of the text, the version on CGT 54053 is the only one that preserves the final hymn completely.
On the verso of the papyrus, following pages 6 and 7 of the recto text, there are traces of administrative and accounting texts.
