General description

Book of the Dead

Cat. 1791 is the Book of the Dead of Iuefankh. This papyrus has 165 spells in text and images and measures 18.5m in length. The spells range in content and would allow Iuefankh to perform specific actions or to protect himself in the netherworld.

The texts on this papyrus include spells for allowing the deceased to move around freely in the underworld, preventing parts of the body from being removed, repelling snakes and crocodiles, fighting off demons, dying a second time, transforming into several animals, knowing ones way in the netherworld, and sailing in the bark of the sun god Re.

This papyrus is the basis for Richard Lepsius’ seminal study of 1842, in which the German scholar introduced the Book of the Dead spell numbering system that is still in use today.

Note: The papyrus is currently out of display due to the refurbishment of the room.
