General description

Book of the Dead

Cat. 1837 is a Book of the Dead papyrus made for the woman Tasheretkhonsu. The papyrus has 32 spells of which several are represented by drawings. On the top right of the papyrus, the coffin of Tasheretkhonsu is carried on a boat and an Opening of the Mouth Ritual is performed on the deceased. In the following scenes the deceased stands in adoration before several gods and she receives offerings. In the middle of the papyrus a large scene with the Elysian Fields of the netherworld is depicted. The final large scene on the left side of the papyrus shows the weighing of the heart scene. Here the deceased is standing in front of a tribunal of 42 gods (depicted at the top of the scene) contending that her actions in life were fair and that she deserves passage into the netherworld.
