General description

The Turin King list or the so-called "Royal Canon"

The recto of this papyrus displays a tax register dating to the reign of Ramesses II mentioning several highly placed officials of the temple of Sobek, the temple of Amun and Superintendents of fortresses along the southern border of Egypt.

On the verso there is the Turin King list, also known as the "Royal Canon of Turin" is a list that intended to record all the kings of Egypt and their exact position in time since the creation of the world by the Egyptian gods. Each king was recorded with a title, their identity and length of reign in years, months and sometimes even up to the day. The gods were the first official rulers of Egypt according to this document, as the list starts with the reigns of gods such as Geb, Osiris, Horus, Seth, Maat, etc. Human kings are found from the third column onward, starting with king Menes/Narmer (3100 BCE) up until the last king of the Second Intermediate Period (1650 BCE). The purpose of the composition of this document could have been very simple, namely to legitimise the reign of king Ramesses II as being a descendant from a lineage of important kings.

Note: The papyrus is currently out of display due to the refurbishment of the room.
