The aim of the summer school is to offer a balanced combination of taught classes and practical exercise, to teach students how to extract and evaluate historical information from different kinds of Coptic documents, and to familiarize them with practical skills and the protocol of papyrological editorial practice.

Main instructors and invited speakers will be lecturing on the history and composition of the papyrus collection of the Museo Egizio, on the paleography and decipherment of Coptic documentary hands, on linguistic, textual, and material aspects of Coptic documentary papyri, and on historical contexts of Coptic documentary writing in administration, legal practices, economy, and daily life in Late Antique and early Islamic Egypt.

Supervised by the main instructors, each student will be working on an unpublished papyrus form the Turin collection, elaborating a description, edition, and interpretation of the document, and presenting the results in a final workshop.

Classes will be taught in English.

Papyrologists at Work: Coptic Papyri and the History of Late Antique and Early Islamic Egypt

Alain Delattre

Abstract: Coptic papyrology was born almost 150 years ago, and since then the study of papyri and ostraca written in Coptic has yielded a wealth of information about Late Antique and Early Islamic Egypt. The lecture will look at some of the milestones in the history of the discipline and detail the prospects and challenges facing papyrologists.

The lecture will be streamed on Facebook and will be available afterwards on the Museo Egizio YouTube channel.

How to get from Turin Airport to the City Centre

You have two transportation options to get to the city centre. You can take a taxi or the bus. Taking a Taxi is always the most convenient way to get to the city. They are reliable and provide 24/7 door-to-door transportation, getting you to the city centre in 25 minutes for around €38.

For a more cost-savvy alternative, you can take the local bus, which takes 40 minutes to Turin city centre. The ticket cost is about €7 (to pay by card in the bus). The final stop would be the train station Porta Nuova.

How to get from Turin Train Station to the City?

Turin has two train stations, Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, both located already in the city centre. Porta Nuova is close to the centre, 5 minutes walking.
