An International Summer School in Coptic Papyrology, the seventh after Vienna 2006, Leipzig 2008, Strasbourg 2010, Heidelberg 2012, Barcelona 2014, and Paris 2018, will be held at the Museo Egizio in Turin from 3 to 10 September 2023. It will be organized by the Museo Egizio in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin, the Università di Torino, and the Fondazione per le scienze religiose (Bologna).

Announcement

An International Summer School in Coptic Papyrology, the seventh after Vienna 2006, Leipzig 2008, Strasbourg 2010, Heidelberg 2012, Barcelona 2014, and Paris 2018, will be held at the Museo Egizio in Turin from 3 to 10 September 2023. It will be organized by the Museo Egizio in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin, the Università di Torino, and the Fondazione per le scienze religiose (Bologna).

Graduates, PhD students, and young postdocs from any relevant discipline (e.g., Coptology, Egyptology, Papyrology, Religious Studies, Ancient History, Arabic Studies, Byzantine Studies, etc.) are invited to apply, provided that they have acquired a solid knowledge of the Coptic language (Sahidic dialect). Students will have the opportunity to work on unpublished original papyri from the Turin collection, with the perspective of a peer-reviewed online publication.

Free accommodation will be provided. The number of places is restricted to 15. A fee of € 300 will be charged. Travel to and from Turin cannot be covered and must be arranged individually by the participants. Two successful applicants from Egypt who have no financial support from their institution can receive a stipend to cover their fee and travel costs.

What is going to happen?

The aim of the summer school is to offer a balanced combination of taught classes and practical exercise, to teach students how to extract and evaluate historical information from different kinds of Coptic documents, and to familiarize them with practical skills and the protocol of papyrological editorial practice.

Main instructors and invited speakers will be lecturing on the history and composition of the papyrus collection of the Museo Egizio, on the paleography and decipherment of Coptic documentary hands, on linguistic, textual, and material aspects of Coptic documentary papyri, and on historical contexts of Coptic documentary writing in administration, legal practices, economy, and daily life in Late Antique and early Islamic Egypt.

Supervised by the main instructors, each student will be working on an unpublished papyrus, elaborating a description, edition, and interpretation of the document, and presenting the results in a final workshop.

Classes will be taught in English.
