Libro dei Morti
Suppl. 8438 è un papiro lungo 14 metri, rinvenuto nella tomba dell’architetto reale Kha. Quest’ultimo è rappresentato sul lato sinistro del papiro assieme alla moglie Merit, stanti, in adorazione davanti al dio Osiride. Sul papiro sono conservate 33 formule dal “Libro dei Morti”, alcune delle quali accompagnate da vignette. La prima vignetta alla destra della scena con Osiride mostra il sarcofago di Kha mentre viene condotto nella tomba. Prima di entrare nella tomba, il sarcofago è disposto verticalmente ed è praticato il rituale dell’“Apertura della Bocca” per ridestare i sensi di Kha. Le vignette seguenti raffigurano diversi uccelli, il dio Ptah, un serpente e un fiore di loto. Appena sotto queste vignette ci sono formule che permetterebbero a Kha di trasformarsi in una data entità. Accanto a queste vignette c’è un’altra scena con la celebrazione del rituale dell’Apertura della Bocca, seguita da due formule per respingere coccodrilli e serpenti, due formule per affrettare il passo e lasciare la tomba come un uccello Ba e una formula per bere acqua. Seguono, poi, tre scene con informazioni sul Ba di diverse divinità, una scena con la raffigurazione delle sette vacche e il toro celesti e due formule per fabbricare amuleti protettivi. Il Libro dei Morti si conclude, infine, con alcune vignette raffiguranti i cancelli custoditi che conducono ai Campi Elisi, il luogo del riposo dei defunti nell’Aldilà.

black, white, red, blue green, yellow The first vignette to the right of the scene with Osiris shows the coffin of Kha being pulled to his tomb. Before entering the tomb, the coffin is placed standing upwards and an opening of the mouth ritual is performed to restore Kha's senses. The next vignettes depict several images of birds, the god Ptah, a snake, and a lotus flower. The text beneath these vignettes are all spells that would allow Kha to transform himself into that specific entity. Next to these vignettes is another opening of the mouth scene, followed by two spells for warding of crocodiles and snakes, two spells for running fast and for leaving the tomb as a Ba bird, a spell for drinking water, 3 scenes with knowledge of the Ba's of several deities, a scene with the depiction of the 7 celestial cows and a bull, and two spells to fashion protective amulets. Lastly, the Book of the Dead is concluded with several vignettes depicting guarded gates that lead to the Elysian Fields.
